SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Conventional packaging materials and disposable solutions have a significant impact on the environment and resources. Sustainability Packaging solutions offer a way to protect and market products without unnecessarily burdening the environment.

Below you can find out what sustainable packaging materials are, why they are important for companies and how we, as a B2B packaging manufacturer, provide sustainable packaging solutions.

What is sustainable packaging?

What is sustainable packaging?

Sustainability packaging is characterised by the fact that it is more environmentally friendly over its entire life cycle than conventional packaging. There is no rigid definition, but essentially they use materials that either come from natural, renewable raw materials or can be easily recycled without any loss of quality.

It also includes resource-saving manufacturing processes and a well thought-out design that ensures product protection - because packaging is only sustainable if it protects the product so well that no unnecessary waste is produced due to damaged goods. The energy required for production and recycling is also included in the balance.

General information on sustainable packaging

Variety of sustainable packaging

Sustainability Packaging solutions can look very different. Plastic-based packaging is often replaced by fibre-based materials such as cardboard or paper, preferably from certified sources (e.g. FSC®-certified). Innovative natural materials are also used - from grass fibres to bagasse, hemp and straw to fungal material (mycelium) or algae materials.

Use of bioplastics

Another option is the use of bioplastics (bio-based or biodegradable plastics) and recycled plastics. It is crucial that the raw materials are obtained and processed in an environmentally friendly way. Packaging made from renewable raw materials is not automatically environmentally friendly - additional coatings or long transport routes can worsen the eco-balance. This is why sustainable packaging often favours regionally produced materials and efficiently planned logistics.

Reduction in the use of materials

Another important aspect is reducing the amount of material used. Intelligent Packaging design - such as lighter materials, thinner films or customised sizes - can save material while retaining functionality. Less material means fewer resources used in production and less waste after use. Some sustainable packaging is reusable or designed for reusable systems, which further reduces waste. Overall, the aim of sustainable packaging is to minimise the environmental footprint of packaging from production to disposal.
Legal requirements

Legal requirements

The legal requirements in the packaging sector are becoming stricter across Europe - see also the Packaging Act. Governments and the EU are constantly introducing new regulations to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. For example, the planned EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) stipulates that from 2030, only packaging that is at least 70% recyclable may be placed on the market. Some countries already have quotas for the use of recyclate (the proportion of recycled material in new packaging) and bans on certain disposable packaging.

The companies that switch to sustainable, reusable and recyclable packaging at an early stage are better equipped for these changes. They do not have to make hectic changes in order to comply with legal requirements, but fulfil them proactively. This reduces the risk of penalties or sales bans and provides planning security. In short, sustainable packaging makes your business model future-proof, as it already incorporates upcoming regulations. At the same time, you make an important contribution to global sustainability goals (such as the Sustainable Development Goals for climate protection and responsible consumption).

Why is sustainable packaging important?

Conservation of resources

Switching to more sustainable packaging is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to reduce environmental pollution and conserve finite resources. Our current approach to packaging is contributing massively to the climate, biodiversity and resource crisis: More and more primary raw materials are being used for packaging, waste volumes are growing and packaging waste is polluting the environment and oceans.

Material origin

The circular economy aims to keep materials in the economic cycle for as long as possible and minimise waste. For packaging, this means that instead of disposable and landfill, the focus is on reuse, recycling and high-quality material cycles. By designing packaging that conserves resources, optimising recycling and manufacturing it from recycled materials, the need for primary raw materials is significantly reduced.

Customer awareness

Sustainability awareness is constantly growing and more and more end consumers are paying attention to the packaging of a product. Many favour solutions that are recyclable, made from sustainable materials or plastic-free. Studies show: This expectation is no longer a niche trend, but a clear purchasing decision factor. Customers associate sustainable packaging with quality and a sense of responsibility.

Brand image

Sustainable packaging is a visible signal of a company's values. Those who opt for environmentally friendly solutions show customers, partners and the public that ecological responsibility is taken seriously. This strengthens trust in the brand, creates positive associations and can help a company stand out from the competition. Sustainability thus becomes part of the brand identity and contributes to long-term customer loyalty.

Sustainability certifications:
The FSC® seal

Since 2018, we have been able to produce your packaging in accordance with FSC guidelines. (Our FSC® licence number: FSC® C144083).

The FSC® is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) that has set itself the task of protecting forests. Members of the organisation include individuals and associations as well as representatives of various interest groups. The central concern of the FSC® is to ensure responsible forest management from controlled sources in accordance with local interests. Today, the FSC® is represented in over 80 countries worldwide and is therefore internationally active. FSC®-certified products are - in addition to wood - also products made of wood or wood fibres, i.e. paper or cardboard. For processing companies in the paper and packaging industry, FSC® certification means complete chain of custody certification: from the forest to the end customer.
